Prenatal and Postpartum Depression Program

Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders Clinic
The Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders Clinic is co-directed by Drs. Samantha Meltzer-Brody and Cort Pedersen. The clinic provides assessment and treatment, including both psychotherapy and medication for women with depression or anxiety disorders during pregnancy and the postpartum period. UNC physicians work with nurses, midwives, counselors, and social workers in the community to help create the best plan for managing symptoms and fostering a healthy pregnancy and postpartum period.

Moms and Emotions
UNC offers an educational group called “Moms and Emotions” taught by Dr. Pedersen, at the UNC Women’s Health Information Center (WHIC) just off the lobby of the UNC Women’s Hospital. This is a one-time class, primarily to educate pregnant women anticipating childbirth. For details, please call 919-843-1759.

 

 

Support Groups
UNC is offering Support groups for women with depression associated with pregnancy and motherhood.  Weekly meetings will be located in the Outpatient Psychiatry Department at UNC.  For more information, contact our center by email (womensmooddisorders@med.unc.edu) or by calling 919-966-9640.

 

 

 

Menstrually Related Mood Disorders Program

The Menstrually Related Mood Disorders Program is run by Dr. David R. Rubinow, Chair of the UNC Department of Psychiatry, and Dr. Kathleen Lapp. Patients are offered assessment, treatment, including psychotherapy and hormone replacement therapy for women with mood disorders and hormonal disturbances surrounding menopause or their monthly cycle.

Perimenopause Clinic
If you feel you may have Perimenopausal Depression, please call us at 919-966-4738 to schedule an appointment.

Premenstrual Syndrome Clinic
If you feel you may have severe PMS or Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), please call us at 919-966-9640 to discuss our evaluation process. All women will undergo an initial screening and evaluation to determine severity of mood symptoms over the course of the menstrual cycle. Women can schedule an appointment or take part in one of our Research Studies.
