Amantadine for prevention of weight gain in first episode psychosis

The purpose of this study is to determine if amantadine added very soon after starting olanzapine therapy can prevent weight gain due to olanzapine, in first episode subjects.

Inclusion:

•  ages 18-45, all races and genders

•  meets DSM IV criteria for a psychotic disorder.

•  monotherapy with olanzapine is planned or has recently been started by the subject's treating psychiatrist

•  less than 8 weeks of antipsychotic therapy (other than olanzapine)

•  less than 12 weeks of treatment with olanzapine

•  able to consent

Exclusion:

•  current substance dependence or heavy substance use

•  requires ongoing treatment with a medication known to affect weight (to be reviewed by study   

physicians)

•  suicidal or homicidal

•  Female patients who are either pregnant or nursing.
