Chair's Message
Message from the Chair of Psychiatry
David R. Rubinow, M.D.
The UNC Department of Psychiatry has a longstanding commitment to excellence in each of our three vital missions: clinical service, teaching, and research. In all of these areas, our tradition of integrating biological and psychosocial perspectives is emphasized.
We offer a comprehensive array of clinical services that span the entire spectrum of psychiatric illnesses. The central site for our outpatient, partial hospitalization, and inpatient programs is the NC Neurosciences Hospital, which opened in the spring of 1996.
The Department of Psychiatry’s residency training programs in General (Adult) and Child Psychiatry are among the most respected in the country. Each year, we attract the very best and brightest residents and offer comprehensive training, which integrates cutting edge neurobiology and pharmacology with psychological and social approaches to the understanding and treatment of psychiatric illnesses. Graduates of our program can be found in positions of leadership in academic (including four current Chairs of major departments of psychiatry), public service, and private practice settings. We are also proud of our APA-accredited Psychology Internship Training Program as well as our NIMH-supported Centers of Excellence in Eating Disorders, Psychosis, Bipolar Disorder, Women's Mood Disorders, and Forensic Psychiatry. Please learn more about our department on this website.
