The Childhood Trust

The Childhood Trust is the non-profit fundraising and public education arm of the Program on Childhood Trauma and Maltreatment (“PCTM”), an outpatient clinical program at the University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill. PCTM began in1988 with a generous grant from Linnea and Dean Smith. Through additional, ongoing funding from The Childhood Trust, approximately 150 abused children and their families are provided highly specialized diagnostic and treatment services annually.

The Program’s team of clinical experts offers a variety of services to victims, families and professionals throughout North Carolina:

  • Specialized evaluation, treatment and support for victims of psychological trauma and child abuse and their families;
  • Training and case consultation for mental health, social services, legal and law enforcement professionals in the assessment and management of cases of alleged child abuse;
  • Forensic evaluations, case reviews, and expert witness testimony in cases of alleged abuse.

Drs. Mark Everson and Barbara Boat started the Program on Childhood Trauma and Maltreatment. Dr. Boat has since left UNC and started a sister program at the University of Cincinnati. Under the direction of Dr. Everson, a leading authority on child maltreatment, the Program is dedicated to promote safety and healing for maltreated and traumatized children, regardless of their financial status. In fact, approximately two-thirds of the children treated received services pro bono or at reduced fees, so private funding is critical to the Program’s success. Funding is specifically used for:

  • Treatment scholarships to provide clinical services for needy children
  • Expansion of existing staff to serve more children.
  • Developing training workshops for mental health, law enforcement and legal professionals

The North Carolina facts are staggering:

  • Every five minutes a child is abused or neglected.
  • 25-40 children die each year as a result of abuse.
  • More than 120,000 children are reported to authorities each year in our state.
