Diana Perkins, MD, MPH, is the creator and Medical Director of the OASIS clinic. She is a Professor of Psychiatry at the UNC School of Medicine. Her professional interest includes improving treatment for psychotic disorders. Dr. Perkins received her medical degree from the University of Maryland in 1984 and her masters of public health from UNC-CH in 1992. She enjoys spending time with family, cooking, gardening and windsurfing.
David Penn, PhD, is Director of Psychological Services for OASIS. Dr. Penn is a Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at UNC-Chapel Hill. He received his MS degree from Villanova University and his PhD from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Dr. Penn conducts individual weekly therapy with clients at the UNC Hospitals Schizophrenia Treatment and Evaluation Program (STEP) and at the OASIS clinic. His research areas include social cognition in schizophrenia, psychosocial treatment of schizophrenia and stigma.
Bebe Smith, MSW, LCSW, is a key member of the OASIS Development Team. In addition to her duties at OASIS, Bebe is Director of Outpatient Services for the STEP Clinic, part of the Schizophrenia Treatment and Evaluation Program of the UNC Department of Psychiatry. She has worked in the STEP Clinic since 1995. Ms. Smith graduated from Vassar College with a BA in English in 1984, and took her MSW from the UNC School of Social Work in 1993. She became interested in working with adults with severe mental illness through volunteer work at a psychiatric hospital in England and as a social work intern at Club Nova in Carrboro, NC. Her interests include educating mental health professionals and implementing psychosocial treatment programs that improve the quality of life for individuals with psychotic disorders. Since 1995, she has provided clinical training for psychiatry residents and graduate students in social work, nursing, rehabilitation psychology, and counseling. Bebe has been involved with OASIS since the early planning stages and has assisted in writing grants for funding. She continues to provide consultation and support to staff and stays busy looking for additional funding so that the program can continue to grow.
Karen Graham, MD, is the Physician/Psychiatrist at OASIS. She is a board-certified psychiatrist who worked at the UNC STEP (Schizophrenia Treatment and Evaluation Program) before coming to OASIS in 2006. Dr. Graham continues to be involved with clinical research involving young adults at risk for developing psychosis and those in the early stages of illness. Her current research focuses on understanding and preventing risk for antipsychotic-associated obesity. Dr. Graham received her MD from McMaster University in Canada. She enjoys spending time with family, engaging in outdoor activities, reading sci-fi books, and playing with her cats.
Sylvia Saade, PhD, LCSW, the OASIS Program Director, received her BA from American University of Beirut (AUB) in Lebanon. She received a second MA from the University of Toronto, Canada, and her PhD from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris, France. She has worked in the mental health field since 1982, supporting children and adults who experience trauma, anxiety, depression, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Her focus has been on trauma work, developmental stages, and family systems. In her spare time, she enjoys swimming, reading, exploring new places, playing with her Jack Russell terrier, and discussing politics.
Lyse DeBourguignon, MSW, LCSW, is the OASIS Key Worker who has been with the OASIS team since May 2006. She received her MSW from the Smith College School for Social Work. Lyse has worked in a residential setting with children and families dealing with emotional and behavioral disorders. She is trained to provide individual and group therapy, as well as home visits to young adults. Lyse is multi-lingual, speaking French, Spanish, Russian and English. She enjoys reading, traveling, and the company of her dog.
Lisa Cooper, Administrative Assistant, has been employed at UNC since March 2000 and has worked at OASIS since December 2005. She is a Certified Professional Coder and has worked at the Durham Center and the OPC Area Program, local governmental agency responsible for oversight and management of publicly-funded mental health, developmental disability and substance abuse services in Orange, Person and Chatham counties. Lisa attended North Carolina Central University where she majored in Public Administration. For fun, she enjoys traveling, cooking, and watching drama-filled reality tv shows.
