The UNC medical center is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, on Manning Drive on the south side of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus. Here you will find UNC Hospitals, which include NC Memorial Hospital, NC Children's Hospital, NC Women's Hospital, NC Neurosciences Hospital (see photo below) and the NC Cancer Hospital. The Department of Psychiatry is located in the NC Neurosciences Hospital.
If you are planning a trip to UNC Hospitals please note:
- The road in front of UNC Hospitals has changed due to construction of the NC Cancer Hospital. In addition, the door to the NC Neurosciences Hospital and the steps leading from the Neurosciences Hospital to the Emergency Department are now closed.
- All patients, visitors and employees accessing the NC Neurosciences Hospital are asked to enter through the NC Women’s Hospital and then proceed to the NC Neurosciences Hospital through the Hospitals’ lobby concourse.
- The Psychiatry Chair's Office and the Psychiatry Education Office, as well as Psychiatry Inpatient Admissions and the Outpatient Clinic are located on the FIRST Floor of the Neurosciences Hospital. All are accessible via elevators from the GROUND floor of the Neurosciences lobby.
- The STEP Art Gallery, Brushes With Life: Art, Artists and Mental Illness, is open to the public during regular hospital business hours and is located on the third floor of the Neurosciences Hospital.
Directions from the North:
- Take NC 86 South, which becomes Martin Luther King Boulevard (formerly Airport Road), to downtown Chapel Hill.
- Turn right onto Cameron Avenue (2nd light after Franklin Street), then make an immediate left onto Pittsboro Street.
- Bear left when the road splits; go through the light to cross South Columbia Street and you will be on Manning Drive near UNC Hospitals.
- Patient and visitor parking for the Hospitals is available in the Dogwood Deck, which is 3/10 of a mile on the right.
- For Emergency Room or Urgent Care Parking, stay on Manning Drive past the parking decks and turn left on Gravely Drive, following the Emergency Room signs.
Directions from the South:
- Take US 15-501 North to Chapel Hill; US 15-501 becomes South Columbia Street at the NC 54 intersection.
- From South Columbia Street, turn right on Manning Drive.
- Patient and visitor parking for the Hospitals is available in the Dogwood Deck, which is 3/10 of a mile on the right.
- For Emergency Room or Urgent Care Parking, stay on Manning Drive past the parking decks and turn left on Gravely Drive, following the Emergency Room signs.
Directions from the East:
- Take 1-40 West to exit #273A.
- Take NC 54 West (Raleigh Road) toward Chapel Hill
- Stay in the right lane on NC 54 West and watch for signs to US 15-501 South (North Fordham Blvd).
- Just past the BP station on the right, take the SECOND ramp (looping around in a sharp right curve) up onto US 15-501 South.
- At the stop light at the top of the ramp, turn right onto 15-501 South.
- Once you are on 15-501 South, go to the second traffic light and turn right onto Manning Drive.
- Patient and visitor parking for the Hospitals is available in the Dogwood Deck, which is 9/10 of a mile from US 15-501 on the left.
- For Emergency Room or Urgent Care parking, turn right on Gravely Drive, following the Emergency Room signs.
Directions from the West:
- Take NC 54 East to Chapel Hill.
- Exit at Columbia Street/US 15-501 and turn left onto South Columbia Street.
- From South Columbia Street, turn right on Manning Drive.
- Patient and visitor parking for the Hospitals is available in the Dogwood Deck, which is 3/10 of a mile on the right.
- For Emergency Room or Urgent Care Parking, stay on Manning Drive past the parking decks and turn left on Gravely Drive, following the Emergency Room signs.
Parking Information:
- Patients and visitors may park in the Dogwood Parking Deck or the Ambulatory Care Center parking lot at a cost of one dollar an hour or fraction thereof, to a maximum of $6 for a full day. Discount coupons for all-day parking can be purchased at the Cashier's Desk in the Main (Memorial) Hospital lobby between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Discount coupons come in books of five and cost $20 per book.
- Parking for patients visiting the Urgent Care Center is located outside the Emergency Room main entrance. One vehicle per patient is allowed in the lot. You must request a parking permit from the Emergency Department security officer or the admitting receptionist in order to park here.
- Valet Parking is available to all patients and visitors to any of the Hospitals. It is located at the front door of the N.C. Women's and Children's Hospitals. The cost for valet parking is $8. Discount coupons can be purchased from the Cashier's Desk in the Main (Memorial) Hospital lobby between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Discount coupons come in books of five and cost $35 per book.
- Handicapped Parking is available for up to four hours in any of the Handicapped Parking spaces located directly in front of the entrance to each hospital building. Additional handicapped spaces are located in the Dogwood Parking Deck. Handicapped-accessible shuttles service these spaces. If you need assistance from the parking deck, please contact the attendant via the call box phones.
