The
Department of Psychiatry was created, along
with the other clinical departments, when
the School of Medicine expanded from a two-year
pre-clinical medical school to a fully accredited
school of medicine in 1952. Charged with
developing a training pipeline for psychiatrists
to staff North Carolina's growing mental
health system, the Department's founding
chair, George Ham, MD, emphasized a progressive
integration of biological and social factors
with then-traditional psychological approaches
in the study and treatment of psychiatric
illnesses. Ham’s vision also included
an appreciation of the synergy among the
Department's three missions of clinical
service, training, and research.
Today,
the Department of Psychiatry is tirelessly
expanding and adapting to meet a host of
changing needs. The UNC Department of Psychiatry’s
residency training programs in General Psychiatry
and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry are
among the most respected in the country.
We offer comprehensive training integrating
cutting-edge neurobiology and pharmacology
with psychological and social approaches
to understanding and treatment of psychiatric
illnesses. Graduates of our programs assume
positions of leadership in academia (including
several current Chairs of major departments
of psychiatry), public service, private
practice, and other areas of the private
sector. The Department of Psychiatry takes
pride in the accomplishments of its residents
as well as its faculty.
