Summary Statement:
Dr. James Garbutt is interested in the psychopharmacology of alcoholism and mood and also anxiety disorders. He is the Medical Director of our Alcohol and Substance Abuse Program and runs a clinic that evaluates and treats individuals with alcoholism, other drug problems, and psychiatric illnesses. He also runs a clinic for psychopharmacological treatment of mood and anxiety disorders. His group generally has several clinical trials of new medications for alcoholism running. Dr. Garbutt is a member of the Committee on the Protection of the Rights of Human Subjects (IRB for the School of Medicine). He works with several other physicians to provide electroconvulsive therapy to patients at UNC Hospitals.
